Stationary Scrolling

Validation level: 5. CHI, UIST, CSCW and TOCHI paper publication

Stationary Scrolling extends the scrolling through non-spatial coordinates to multiple dimensions, for example, fadedness and size. This effectively modifies the saliency of an object through scrolling without modifying the display position.

The user wants to navigate through a screen full of different window applications and to do so he can scroll through them.

During the scrolling the position of the windows stay the same, but the saliency (transparency in this case changes).

Example of a change in Size saliency achieved through scrolling.

Highlights:

By abstracting the definition of scrolling the author solved two problems that affect scrolling systems: discontinuity in salience, and undermining the user’s spatial memory. One of the proposed solutions that were born out of this was Stationary Scrolling.

Limitations:

There are no limitations to this technique given that it's more of a theoretical study.
